DJ BREEZE.. has been DJ'ing longer than some of todays biggest names had even heard of turntables. Having worked extensively with Essential Platinum, he has gone on to start Infinity Recordings, which has become one of the main labels to watch in '99. His talent has seen him play at Helter Skelter, Dreamscape, Slammin' Vinyl, Hardcore Heaven, along with clubs up and down the Country every weekend. His latest release, "Let's Fly" gathered 76% of the vote for "Best Tune of 98" on this website, so, we caught up with him and pressured him to answer..
"There has been a lot of pretty boring discussion over the last few years about the scene dying. It's still here, but do you think it's climbing out of a hole or just slipping slowly away?"
"It's getting its direction sorted out at the mo. It has taken a slight fall but I remember D&B doing the same thing until they found their direction, then things picked up. I think the same is happening with the Hardcore. There are plenty of new faces appearing on the Production side of things, so maybe this will help."
"Essential Vinyl - How did it
start?"
"Started 'cos I was bored of going into my local record shop and never getting the tunes I wanted. So, me and my mate thought "Feck it, let's get something going.."
"Who's tracks are at the front of your box, and.. why?"
"Errrm, mostly my own, cos someone has to play them!"
Breeze is full of self modesty at times.. and at other times blows his trumpet so bloody loud he wakes up people in Canada. This was obviously one of his quiet days..
"You've been getting around a bit recently - and you've been playing more gigs as well <g> - but very few other people are coming through. Why do you think this is?"
"You need to show some graft to the scene before you can come in and just start playing anywhere. As you know, all the other DJ's in the scene are all producers and remixers. It's not because it's another money spinner, because the money side went a few years ago. It's more of helping to push the music forward. Look at DJ's such as Force and Styles, Brisk, Hixxy - all hard workers and regular producers, so from that they are busy with their DJ'ing work too.
"Choose 5 words to describe yourself"
"Fat, hard, fast, had it, lost it <g>".
I ignored the fact that he had given me 7 words and just pressed on regardless..
"Where is the music heading then? It does seem to have been stuck in a rut for a while.."
"For me, I like the style of Quest, Force and Styles. I don't think your "rip off" tune is going anywhere."
"What are you working on at the moment? And does it have the word "Fly" in it anywhere??"
"Working towards the release of "Let's Fly" mixes, hopefully they'll do well. It has a full range of mixes from Unique, Dimenzions, Unknown and of course the original. Out in the stores by the end of September (fingers crossed).
"Stage Dancers - Bloody ace or Out of place?"
"Depends if they're fit or not.. hehehehe..
They're ok most of the time, but it makes the rave more of a fecking stage show, and I thought it was the music we went for?"
"Have MC's learnt yet that
crowds like to hear the breakdown to a tune?"
"Hehehe.. some have, mention no names!"
Hmm, trying to get gossip out of this bloke is harder than getting a Presidential stain off a little black dress. I moved on..
"What's the worst DJ nightmare you've ever had?"
"Being drunk at Pleasuredome parties with Charlie B in tow..."
And again, he freezes up and refuses to reveal more.
"Have you ever used your resemblance to Slipmatt to good effect?"
"Only getting into parties when the doormen are being wankers!!"
Oh.. Doormen be wankers? Surely this must be unheard of in the rave scene?? <g> I moved onto some more touchy subjects..
"Mentioning no names, certain characters in the scene have been building up a bad reputation recently. Turning up late (or not at all), demanding full payment for half the time they were booked for, lying about other places to go so that someone else will cover for them.. A lot of the punters find out that these things happen at events, so how do they still get away with it?"
"I guess because some promotors have to put up with it. The punters just won't show up if "DJ Ripper" is the main DJ on a flyer, so they have to book the big names regardless. It's shite, but it happens, and it pisses me off too".
At this point, I'll appologise to any DJ's called DJ Ripper.. ;-)
Breeze recently invested in a furry little ball of shite that pisses on the floor and bites people. Yup, he'd entered the world of dog owners..
"Your dog is a little bitch. Agreed?"
"Yes, but leave my bird out of this!!"
Finally, I asked for some sneak previews.. or peeks into the future..
"I hope the future has many peaks. Pandora Peaks. (Porn star)"
And with that, I left. Breeze is deffinately on a road to greater things..
